Team Korea - "The world is going to need Korean players" | Overwatch World Cup 2017 Press Conference

After dominating the Katowice group stage with their all-star lineup, South Korea came into the playoffs of the 2017 Overwatch World Cup as one of the tournament favorites. Losing their opening map against Team United States, the near-unstoppable Korea squad made quick work of the American team for the remaining round to advance to the semifinals. Going up against the roster of the new defunct Rogue, team South Korea was put to the test against the longstanding French lineup, but thanks to the versatility of Yeon-oh "Fl0w3R" Hwang and the great plays by Zunba, their team was one step closer to the World Cup trophy.

When going up against Team Canada, an underdog team that managed to overcome the odds throughout the tournament to make it to the grand finals, South Korea demonstrated why they were a powerhouse region. After taking the first two maps (King's Row and Hanamura) with ease, South Korea looked to take the series without losing a single map. However, Canada was able to fight back on Junkertown with an impressive push past the Korean defenses while on Attack and an equally spectacular Defense round to secure their first map point in the series.

The momentum looked to be shifting back in Canada's favor for a possible reverse sweep, but South Korea retaliated with an incredibly fast escort through the streets of Numbani thanks to Fl0w3R's great DPS play who was able to pick off high priority targets while having his health topped off by Ryu "Ryujehong" Je-hong's healing. When it was Canada's turn as Attack, the team managed to secure Point A and proceeded to go through the street phase with Liam "Mangachu" Campbell as Torbjörn placing a turret on the payload. The success of this strategy was short-lived, but was able to help the payload finish the round to force a 3-3 tie.

However, with three minutes of time on the clock for South Korea compared to the one for Canada, the odds weren't in the North American team's favour. Canada managed to secure Point A, but was not able to make it far in the streets phase and ended their escort round with only one point. With a surplus of time compared to Canada, South Korea was able to push the payload past Team Canada's marker to take home the Overwatch World Cup for their country once again for the second year in a row.
