The Gaming Industry Has A Big Problem
Gaming is one of the most unstable industries you can work in.
Waves of layoffs, a lack of funding, and the threat of being out of a job if your game fails. Whether it’s independent studios running out of money, or AAA giants like EA and Microsoft turning off the lights, now might be the worst time in history to work in video games.
In this video, we explore the reason why so many studios are shutting down. We examine the history of larger corporations buying up smaller studios like BioWare, Pandemic, and Visceral Games. We look at how important it is to own IPs, as seen with Tencent buying Riot for League of Legends and Microsoft buying Mojang for Minecraft.
Lastly, we examine why studios get shut down despite releasing a successful game, like Tango Gameworks with Hi-Fi Rush.
