No, we’re not talking about flirting under the table with your opponent during your set. The footsies we’re referring to are the tense moments when both players approach each other and try to figure out how to land a clean hit.
A quick disclaimer, this is not a perfect history of footsies in fighting games. We’re going to leave a few games out. We’re going to gloss over some concepts. But overall, this should serve as a satisfactory introduction to footsies, and why it’s so important to the fighting game genre.
